The Young Stress and Vibration Analyst Competition (YSVA) 2012, open for students and young scholars from all over the world, wrapped up at the University of Glasgow, UK on August 30. TJU postgraduate Tan Xiaohua, who specializes in solid mechanics from the School of Mechanical Engineering, won the third prize in the final. This made Tan the first Chinese student to enter the finals of YSVA competition. His brilliant performance showcased the academic level of TJU postgraduates and the quality of graduate education at TJU.
Tan Xiaohua is a PhD candidate under the supervision of Professor Kang Yilan of the School of Mechanical Engineering. She was enrolled in the CSC Program in 2011 to study at the University of Liverpool where she made a lot of academic progress. Tan said she benefited a lot from the opportunity to compete with young students and scholars from across the globe and to be judged by senior experts in academia andindustry. The experience of studying abroad helped improve her research capability, communication ability and researchhorizon.
The YSVA competition, which started in 2007, is organized by the British Society for Strain Measurement (BSSM) and sponsored by internationally renowned enterprises such as AIRBUS, AWE, IMETRUM. The competition takes place alongside other international academic conferences also held by BSSM. Entrants are judged by panels of leading researchers from both the industry and academia. The next competition will be held together with the ICEM16 at the University of Cambridge in 2014.
