TJU to Be Engaged in Sino-Russian Cooperation in Industrial Ecology

On February 20, Honorary President of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) Xu Kuangdi and President of CAE Zhou Ji met with Chief Secretary of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences (SB RAS) Lyakhov Nikolay and his delegation. CAE Executive Vice-President Pan Yunhe and Vice-President Xie Kechang, Tianjin University (TJU) Chairman of the University Council Liu Jianping and Vice-President Shu Gequn as well as Deputy Director General of Tianjin Municipal Science and Technology Commission Li Baochun also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, Honorary President Xu and Chief Secretary Nikolay recalled the consensus reached between the two countries on the Sino-Russian Center of Industrial Ecology and discussed the progress of its establishment. President Zhou pointed out that CAE, Tianjin municipal government and TJU would work together to build the Center. He also stressed that the Secretary of the CPC Tianjin Municipal Committee Zhang Gaoli attached great importance to this initiative. According to Executive Vice-President Pan, as the research achievements of Russia being first applied in Tianjin, cooperation on a larger scale would be promoted. He then presented the strength of TJU as a research university as well as the characteristics of Tianjin and prospected for further cooperation between both sides.

Chairman Liu gave a presentation of TJU history, advantages in disciplines, faculty and talent training. He indicated that TJU will actively engage in the establishment of the Center.

Chief Secretary Nikolay emphasized that the main purpose of his visit was to push forward the cooperation on the establishment of the Center on behalf of the Chairman of SB RAS. After giving an overview of SB RAS, he added that they attached great importance to the research related to ecological environment. He hopes that the cooperation would prioritize in the fields of water resources, ecology and environmental protection.

President Zhou concluded that China’s rapid development goes hand in hand with issues with the environment and resources. Under such circumstances, the founding of the Center meets the requirements of building a resource-conserving and environment -friendly society. The CAE will give active support to the establishment of the Center through introducing advanced technology from Russia and accelerating the transformation of scientific achievements into real productivity.

During their stay, the delegation also visited TJU, some enterprises and industrial parks in Tianjin city and Binhai New Area. The delegation was greeted by Vice Mayor Wang Yeping and other leaders from Tianjin municipal government. Furthermore, Chairman Liu and Vice President Shu of TJU welcomed the delegation on TJU campus. In-depth academic exchanges with the representatives of TJU were held.

The SB RAS delegation also includes International Affairs Adviser to the Chairman Areshchenko Vasily, Head of Innovation and External Economic Department of Institute of Thermal Physics Perepechko Lyudmila, Director of Institute of Water and Ecology Vinokurov Iurii, and Head of Laboratory of Institute of Kinetics and Combustion Bazhin Nikolay.

Set up in 1957, SB RAS consists of 77 research institutes and 8,991 researchers, 63 of whom are Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences and 80 are Corresponding Members. SB RAS leads in world scientific achievements and advanced technology in the fields of physical, mathematical, chemical, and biological sciences, earth sciences, humanities and economics.
