Professor J.W. Hans Niemantsverdriet, Dean of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry at the Eindhoven University of Technology (TJU/e) of Netherland, was conferred Guest Professorship of Tianjin University (TJU) by Vice President Feng Yaqing during his visit to TJU from February 28 to March 3. A Conferring Ceremony was held on March 2. The representatives of the School of Chemical Engineering and the Office of International Cooperation attended the ceremony.
During her meeting with Professor Niemantsverdriet, Vice President Feng Yaqing gave an overview of TJU history and distinctive disciplines. In recognition of the achievements Professor Niemantsverdriet has made in the field of catalysis, Vice President Feng prospected for the collaboration between the two sides in diversified ways. She then invited Professor Niemantsverdriet to offer short-term lectures at TJU regularly each year and establish platforms for joint research so as to promote the development of the chemical engineering of TJU. Professor Niemantsverdriet expressed his appreciation for the honor of the Guest Professorship. He added that the intention for further cooperation with the School of Chemical Engineering had been reached through this visit. Based on the foundation of cooperation built by his previous visits to TJU, he hoped to work together with the School to set up a joint research platform in surface chemistry and catalysis by integrating the advantages of both sides.
During his stay at TJU, Professor Niemantsverdriet made presentations on the Journal of Catalysis and on how to write research papers to faculty and students. He also gave a lecture on the principles of catalysis and reaction dynamics at the School of Chemical Engineering. Furthermore, Professor Niemantsverdriet and the professors of the School had in-depth exchanges and agreed on the long-term cooperation.
J.W. Hans Niemantsverdriet obtained his PhD degree from the Delft University of Technology in 1983. After that, he worked at the University of Munich and the Fritz-Haber-Institute at Berlin. In 1989, he started his academic career at the Eindhoven University of Technology. Now he’s the Dean of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Chemistry and a renowned scholar in the field of industrial catalysis. The collaboration between Professor Niemantsverdriet and the School of Chemical Engineering of TJU was initiated in 2010.
