NUS President Chen Zhuquan Visits TJU

On September 11, President Chen Zhuquan of the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Director Xu Zhenyi of NUS Office of Asian Affairs visited Tianjin University (TJU). President Li Jiajun met with the guests. Representatives from the School of Architecture, the Office of Undergraduate Affairs and the Office of International Cooperation also attended the meeting.

President Li introduced to the guests TJU's history, disciplinary strength and the progress made in scientific research and international cooperation over the recent years. He expected that TJU and NUS would further strengthen cooperation through scientific research and student exchange. Other TJU attendees talked about the previous educational exchanges between TJU and NUS, the engineering education reform and the implementation of an internationalization strategy at TJU.

President Chen presented an overview of NUS, especially detailing aspects of international cooperation. He indicated that NUS attaches great importance to a high-level internationalized education. To achieve this goal, NUS established Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Yale-NUS College in cooperation with Duke University and Yale University respectively, providing students with distinctive learning methods and experiences. In addition, President Chen mentioned a special training model utilized by NUS, which is to promote general education through residential colleges. He also hoped for an all-around as well as an in-depth cooperation between the two universities.

Founded in 1905, NUS is the oldest and most prestigious university in Singapore. It is also one of the best universities in Asia and stands as one of the tops in world rankings. Professor Chen Zhuquan, an expert in the field of nephrology, was appointed President of NUS in December, 2008. In 2009, the MoU and the Agreement for PhD Program between TJU and NUS were signed.
