From March 18 to 22, 2013, a delegation from Tianjin University led by Vice President Shu Gequn visited Singapore. In Singapore, the delegation participated in the TF-NUS Programme for Leadership in University Management, and visited Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School and Nanyang Technological University.
TF-NUS Programme for Leadership in University Management was hosted by the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Temasek Foundation (TF) from March 18 to 21. This university management program was attended by representatives from NUS, A*STAR, and 15 Chinese universities, including the Harbin Institute of Technology, Nankai University, Tianjin University, Peking University, Shandong University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Sun Yat-sen University, and Tongji University, among others. The topics included Asian higher education in the 21st century, faculty appointments, development and retention, educational philosophy, curriculum reform, internationalization, entrepreneurship in academia, and quality assurance frameworks.
At Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School, the TJU delegation was welcomed by Vice Dean Robert Kamei. They held an in-depth discussion concerning the organization and management, disciplines, student training, and research of the medical school.
On July 1, 2005, Duke University and the National University of Singapore partnered to establish Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School (Duke- NUS GMS), a US-style medical school with focuses on clinical practice and research. In 2007, the first batch of 26 students was admitted to the school. The school subsequently enrolled 50 students per year, among whom 20 percent pursued dual MD/PhD degrees.
On March 22, Vice President Shu visited Nanyang Technological University and was received by Vice President Er Ming Hua. They held a discussion regarding joint training of graduate students, staff visits, and research. Both hoped to find research fields of common interest and promote collaboration among the colleges as well as professors at each university, so as to further promote the substantial partnership in student training and research.
NUS and Temasek Foundation (TF) have jointly launched the TF-NUS Programme for Leadership in University Management, aimed at creating a platform for Asian university leaders to discuss issues and share experiences related to university governance and management. The launch of the program, held on March 5, 2013, serves as a platform where breakthrough ideas and practices for the management of Asian universities are shared, learned, generated, and advanced by all participants.
