Science Delegation visits TJU

On September 5, 2013, Global Director of Public RelationofScience,Bill Moranled a two person delegation on a visit to Tianjin University (TJU). President Li Jiajun met with the delegation. Representatives from the Office of Science and Technology, the Personnel Office, the Office of International Cooperation, and faculty from different schools also attended the meeting.

During the meeting, presentations on TJU’s history and development were made to the delegation. Director Moran delivered an introduction onScience, including professor training, individual development plans (IDP), workshops with specific purposes, science careers, prizes for scholars, and mentorship in technical writing. President Li emphasized that TJU’s strength lies in Engineering and the university has paid great attention to the development of teachers. He hoped for more collaboration withScienceso as to increase TJU’s global prestige, and more specifically, the capability of technical writing among faculty and students. He also expected specific cooperation withScienceon the coming 120th anniversary of TJU.

Director Moran and Ruolei Wu, Associate Director of Collaboration and Operations ofScience, also conversed with participating teachers on several points such as qualifications of teachers for entering contests for prizes and how to publish papers in the world’s leading academic journals. During the visit, the delegation also visited the TJU History Museum and the Laboratory of Precision Testing Techniques and Instrument.

Founded in 1880 on $10,000 of seed money from the American inventor Thomas Edison,Scienceis the academic journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), the world's largest general-science society.Sciencehas grown to become the world's leading outlet for scientific news, commentary, and cutting-edge research, with the largest paid circulation of any peer-reviewed general-science journal. Circulated weekly, it has a print subscriber base of approximately 130,000. Competition to publish inScienceis very intense, as an article published in such a highly cited journal can lead to conspicuousness and career advancement for the authors. Around 6% of articles submitted to the editors are accepted for publication globally, while 1.5% are accepted from China.
