From November 26 to 28, 2013, the Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide in Southern Australia visited Tianjin University (TJU) for further cooperation between TJU and the University of South Australia, as well as the cities of Tianjin and Adelaide. TJU President Li Jiajun received the guest.
During the meeting, President Li gave an overview of TJU, including its past and present, as well as new campus planning, and recalled the cooperation between TJU and the University of South Australia. He stated that TJU had established an important partnership with the University of South Australia, and was developing cooperation with the University of Adelaide, the other leading university in Adelaide. With cooperation between TJU and these two excellent universities, the cooperative platform between TJU and the city of Adelaide will broaden. Also, President Li hoped that cooperation between the universities could further promote cooperation between the cities of Tianjin and Adelaide. Lord Mayor Yarwood hoped that this visit could better his understanding of TJU, so as to push forward educational cooperation between TJU and the city Adelaide. Subsequently, the leaders discussed issues of strategic university development, the relationship between educational and urban development, and urban environments and sustainable development.
After the meeting, Lord Mayor Yarwood visited the School of Architecture of TJU. He conversed with faculty representatives and gave a talk on “The past, present, and future of Adelaide” to students, sharing his perspective and idea of urban development planning as a mayor. In addition, he shared his hope to work as a professor at university.
Lord Mayor Yarwood is the youngest-ever Lord Mayor of the City of Adelaide. A town planner with 20 years in state and local government, he has post-graduate qualifications in Regional and Urban Planning and Environmental Studies and has completed a Masters in Business Administration at Adelaide University. He has researched or lectured in Australia, Canada, the United States, New Zealand, India, the Philippines, and Singapore on environment and development planning and management. This visit to Tianjin also marks his first time in China. During his visit, Tianjin Vice Mayor Cao Xiaohong met with Lord Mayor Yarwood for the discussion of cooperation between the two cities. Lord Mayor Yarwood also visited the Sino-Singapore Tianjin Eco-city (SSTEC).
