On May 19, 2014, Tianjin University (TJU) welcomed four experts of the Visiting Committee of the School of Electronic Information Engineering (SEIE). They were: Dr. Dennis Buss, Chief Scientist and former President of Texas Instruments; Dr. Peter Staecker, President and CEO of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) in 2013; Dr. Robert J. Trew, Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of North Carolina State University and former President of the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society; and Dr. Y. Edmund Lien, an EDA/IC expert, winner of 1993 “Friendship Award” of China and former General Manager of the national IC-CAD project of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China.
Chairman Liu Jianping of the University CPC Standing Committee met with the guests. President Assistant Hu Wenping and representatives from SEIE and the Office of International Cooperation attended the meeting. Chairman Liu elaborated on the achievements TJU has made in student training and research, as well as its active role in regional and national development, and expressed his resolution in promoting the internationalization of TJU. He pointed out that since the 18th CPC National Congress, China has attached much importance to the development of informatization and industrialization. In this context, he was pleased to have four leaders of the information industry on campus, and had expectations for their valuable experience and advice. Through their visit, he hoped to further promote international cooperation between TJU and scientific and industrial circles.
The guests highly praised the fruitful achievements realized by TJU during the past year. Dr. Buss, President of the Visiting Committee, said, he was surprised by the development of Tianjin and TJU, and fully affirmed the development of SEIE over the past four years. He expressed his willingness to devote himself to SEIE as a member of the Visiting Committee.
Later, Professor Ma Jianguo gave an overview of the itinerary and mechanisms of the Visiting Committee. Chairman Liu expressed his gratitude for the contributions made by the committee members, and hoped they could give more comprehensive instructions to promote the development of SEIE during this visit.
The Visiting Committee of SEIE was established in 2010, marking an important step for the school towards implementing the Internationalization Strategy of TJU and promoting the reform of engineering education. Following the model of world renowned universities like MIT, this committee serving as a consulting committee comprised of internationally known experts in academia and industry, was set up to help SEIE with the formulation of a more modernized education system. It is the fourth time for the committee to visit SEIE.
