Chung K. Law, Academician of US National Academy of Engineering, Conferred TJU Honorary Professorship

On May 22, 2014, Chung K. Law, Academician of the US National Academy of Engineering and the Robert H. Godard Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University, was conferred an Honorary Professorship of Tianjin University (TJU) by Liu Jianping, Party Secretary and Chairman of the University CPC Standing Committee. Representatives from the School of Mechanical Engineering joined in the conferment ceremony.

Party Secretary Liu extended a warm welcome and congratulations to Professor Law, and spoke highly of his academic achievements. He reviewed the recent achievements of TJU, especially those of the State Key Laboratory of Engines, the only State Key Laboratory on engine research in China, and the Tianjin Co-Innovation Center of Chemical Science and Engineering, one of the first 14 Co-Innovation Centers under the 2011 Project of the Ministry of Education. Party Secretary Liu expressed his hope that Professor Law, as an expert in combustion, could devote additional attention to and provide guidance for the development of TJU while promoting the advancement of TJU and engine research in China.

Professor Law expressed his gratitude for being appointed as a TJU Honorary Professor and spoke highly of TJU’s development in combustion and chemical engineering. He said he first visited TJU in 1983, invited by then TJU President Shi Shaoxi, and held deep affection towards TJU. He promised to strengthen exchange and cooperation with TJU to further promote the disciplinary development of combustion.

After, Wang Shuxin, Dean of the School of Mechanical Engineering gave an introduction to Professor Law and his outstanding achievements in the field of energy and combustion.

Chung K. Law got his doctorate degree in Engineering Physics from the University of California at San Diego in 1973. Now, he is the Robert H. Goddard Professor of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Princeton University. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, an Academician of the US National Academy of Engineering, and a past President of the Combustion Institute. Presently, he directs the Combustion Energy Frontier Research Center and Center for Combustion Energy of Tsinghua University, and enjoys a considerable reputation in the field of combustion throughout the world.
