Rector of the University of Minho Visited TJU

On July 8, 2006, Prof. Antonio Guimaraes, Rector of the University of Minho, Portugal visited Tianjin University, accompanied by Associate Prof. SUN Lin, Dean of Confucius Institute in UMinho. President SHAN Ping met the guests in VIP room, Conference Building. After extending his welcome to the delegation, President SHAN briefly introduced the history, scale, education, research and development plan of TJU. Then Prof. Antonio Guimaraes gave an overview of the University of Minho. Both sides expressed their hope to promote exchange and discussed the possibility of cooperation. Prof. HUANG Tian, Dean of School of Mechanical Engineering, Mr. ZHANG Shujun, Dean of School of International Education and Prof. TAN Xin, Director of International Cooperation Office also joined the meeting. After the meeting, the delegation visited Tianjin University Archives and several labs in School of Chemical Engineering and School of Mechanical Engineering. The University of Minho, founded in 1973, is among the largest universities in Portugal with 16000 students, 1100 faculty and 600 staff. The university has two campuses and 9 schools, each of which has its own graduate school. The Oriental Language and Culture Center of the university is one of the main Chinese-teaching centers in Portugal, and it is the only university in Portugal that includes Chinese as undergraduate compulsory course.
